Build and Use a Tree Leaf and Plant Press

Way back in the dark ages when I was taking tree identification in college, I pressed hundreds of leaves for further study. Even today, you cant beat using a real, preserved leaf to assist you in tree identification. A properly pressed leaf highlights its structure(s) and provides you with a three-dimensional leaf. Collecting the leaf aids you in the initial identification and gives you a self-made field guide for future help. Difficulty: Average Time Required: 2 to 4 hours (including purchasing materials) Heres How Cut a 24 X 24 plywood square in half to make the top and bottom sections of the 12 X 24 press. Place them on top of each other with edges even (c-clamps or bar clamps can be used to keep the wood in position). At each corner of the top and bottom pieces of plywood, measure in 1 1/2 from sides, 2 from top and mark with a pencil. Using drill bit the same size as your bolts, drill a hole through both pieces at each mark.Insert round-headed bolts up through each hole in every corner of both the top and bottom portions of the plywood press. Make sure the hole is small enough to accommodate the bolt but stops at the head. Add a washer and wingnut to each bolt. You now have a press with adjustable tension.Remove winged bolt nuts, washers and the  top portion of the plywood press leaving the bottom portion of the press and four bolts standing upright. It is from this open position that you load the press with any new leaves.Cut two cardboard pieces to fit between the press but not extend be yond the top, bottom or sides of the plywood press and to fit between the bolts. This cardboard is to go between the wood press top and bottom and the pressed material. Collect tabloid sized newspaper. To use: place leaves between double or triple sheets of newspaper, place newspaper between the pieces of cardboard. Close the press by repositioning the top plywood portion over bolts, attach washers, screw on wing nuts and tighten. Tips: Find a leaf on a tree you either know or would like to identify. Collect the leaf or several leaves that most represent an average looking leaf of the tree species. Use an old magazine as a temporary field press.Identify and label each specimen as soon as you collect it as identification is much easier when you can see the entire tree rather than just a few leaves. Remember to take your field guide along. You should not have to pay more than $10 for the material to build this leaf press. You can purchase presses for about $40. What You Need: 2 X 2 sheet of 1/2 plywoodFour 3 round-headed bolts with washers and wing nutsCircular saw, scissors and drillCardboard and newspaper

An Analysis Of The Indomitable Spirit Of Man In Henry...

Henry Ford, the automobile magnate, once stated that the quot;world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward† (Daily Quotations Network). Man has always struggled with uncontrollable aspects of his environment, but his ability to overcome these seemingly indomitable obstacles has earned recognition from numerous classical writers and poets, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. â€Å"One of the real American Poets of yesterday† (Montiero, Preface), Longfellow elaborates on man’s perpetual struggle with life and nature in his poetry. In â€Å"A Psalm of Life,† â€Å"The Village Blacksmith,† and â€Å"The Rainy Day,† Longfellow explores many facets of man’s unyielding will.†¦show more content†¦His health began to fail in 1881, and he died of peritonitis on March 24, 1882. A bust of Longfellow was mounted in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey in 1884 as a tribute to the outstanding writer. He is the only non-British author to be awarded this honor (Williams 21). Longfellow was quot;the first of the front-ranking American poets of his time to go, and his death was widely recognized as marking the beginning of the end of an eraquot; (Wagenknecht 19). A popular poet, Longfellow deals quot;with important subjects clearly and forthrightly while adopting a frankly didactic and inspirational tonequot; (Allabeck 118). He uses simple language; he once stated that if a poet quot;wishes the world to listen and be edified, he will do well to choose a language that is generally understoodquot; (Allabeck 119). Although only a quot;second class poet, quot; his ability to capture his readers interest and appeal to their emotions has made Longfellow a staple figure in the hearts of his followers (Hearn 485). He writes to inspire and improve society using quot;metrical regularityquot; and quot;careful rhymequot; to emphasize his idea that life is meaningful (Allabeck 118). The rhythmic cadence in quot;A Psalm of Life, quot; quot; The Village Blacksmith, quot; and quot; The Rainy Dayquot; suggests that the lives of men are characterized by

Jimi Hedndrix Are You Experienced Essay Example For Students

Jimi Hedndrix Are You Experienced Essay Are You Experienced? The Jimi Hendrix Experience released its first album in early 1967. Popular music had been leaning towards psychedelics for a couple years already and Are You Experienced? came out at about the same time as the Beatles Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Are You Experienced? far exceeded the Beatles triumph in complexity, capturing the essence of the late 1960s culture. Naturally the newer band did not share the immediate success of the Beatles. But its staying power has been testified to by several generations. The British version of Are You Experienced? contained a few subtle differences. Most prominent were the absence of Purple Haze and the addition of Hendrix standard Red House. Purple Haze caught fire in America after the Monterey Pop Festival and became Jimis signature song. Although it was said to have endless verses, Jimi generally sang only the shortened version from the album (with a few ad lib changes). The single was sent to radio stations with a note: This song was intentionally distorted. Do not adjust. Are You Experienced?, as with most of the Experiences music, sounds heavy no matter how many times you listen to it. In actuality, the stony Purple Haze is about as close as they ever come to hard rock. The next song, Manic Depression comes in strong with the opening chords and then reveals Mitch Mitchells trademark rolling drums. It also contains another of Jimis solos worth listening to by any new or Experienced fan. Chas Chandler chose the quietest song on the album to give the world its first taste of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Its first single was Hey Joe, a song written by turn-of-the-century bluesman Billy Roberts. The first bars of Hey Joe leave no doubt that it is being handled by a master. It quickly climbed the British pop charts, topping out at number 2 (behind Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds). No other song written or performed by Jimi Hendrix had as much success as this one. When there are other people around, it makes you feel alive. But when you sit alone and listen to the music, every chord catches in your throat. Love or Confusion has happened upon me more than once when I was suddenly realizing the dispair of yet another relationship. If the answer to his question is not obvious during the song itself, Jimi answers it for you with his very last whisper. Love or Confusion is a wicked twister of emotion. It shakes you up and when you lose your sense of direction, it drops out from under you, leaving you to fall mercilessly to the depths of reality. Thats when May This Be Love enters to let you down easily. Mitch turns on the soft roll. Jimi sings sweetly about his waterfall. The pace picks up, getting hectic for a moment when Jimi recalls the other people in this world, with their plans. But they can do whatever it is that they do. Jimi doesnt care, and neither do I, as long as I have my waterfall. I Dont Live Today goes through a couple of lead-in verses, but it wastes little time getting to one of the most psychedelic minutes in rock. At the apex, Jimi cries, Ah, There aint no life nowhere! When you hear it the statement is oddly comforting. The song leads out with Jimi pleading repeatedly to you: Get Experienced. If a thousand bands havent covered The Wind Cries Mary, it is out of reverence. Short and simple (okay, Im not a musician), this song is like a dream. The colorful descriptions (the traffic lights turn blue tomorrow.) are a hint of what is to become Axis: Bold as Love the Experiences second album. .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .postImageUrl , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:hover , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:visited , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:active { border:0!important; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:active , .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud58bcd236ad26b501d8b851e9c325ccb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Death Of Salesman (4885 words) EssayFire was one of Jimis favorite tunes to play live. Fast paced and funky, it leaves no guessing about Jimis desires. The lyrics petrified a million middle class mothers, as it turned on their daughters. A little advice: move over, Rover. Third Stone From the Sun stands alone in rock history as the only instrumental with words. It tells the story of an alien race which comes down to check out the planet Earth (Mercury Venus Earth, get it?). It sees humans for what they are and comes to a natural conclusion. Obviously a case of supreme intelligence. Anyone who is trying to master guitar effects should start and end here. Youre so foxy, you probably think this song is about you, dont you? Youre not being paranoid. You are just a Foxey Lady. And you make me feel like saying Foxey. The album closes with the title song. Once again, Jimi wants to know, Are You Experienced? If your answer is no, youve been listening to the Hendrix singles. Buy this album and a pair of headphones. It wont be long now.
